All about us

wooden_welcome.gif

I am Melanie, and my husband is Tommy.  We have 3 children, Megan 20, Matthew 17, and David 10 and Megans husband is Philip.   No grandbabies yet, but I recently bought my husband a personalized tag for his pickup that has the word PAW in it.  That should give someone a hint....right?

Tommy is a logger.  While I know many people look down on loggers, they do provide a valuable service.  Just think about that the next time you are using that soft toilet tissue in the bathroom, instead of a nasty ole corncob.  ;)   There are many good logging companies that take their jobs seriously, and are responsible to the enviroment around them.  Not all are "bad" it just seems that the "bad" ones are the only ones you hear about, as is the case in so many things.
I drive a school bus.  Yes, the big cheese wagon.  I love it!  I have worked in factories, and even a bank, and nothing at all has been as good as this.  I love the children, but it also has given me the chance to work, and earn a very small income as well as be home with my children when they are out of school.  That in itself is priceless!  This is my second year on the job.  I subbed in the classroom and on the bus for years before I finally got the fulltime route.   I am soooooo thankful to finally have it!

Tommy and I have been married for 23 years.  We met at a high school dance, Dec. 13, 1980 were engaged two weeks later, and 8 months after that, on Aug. 1, 1981 we got married.  It was love at first site, or first dance I should say.  Its been 23 great years.  And who says there is no such thing as love at first sight?  huh?
My daughter Megan is 20 years old and got married in March 04 to Philip who we love dearly!   If you have seen the video of Gretchen Wilsons, Redneck Woman, just picture my daughter with long brown hair instead of the black.  Everytime we see that video, my husband will say, that is just like Megan.

My middle son is Matthew and he just turned 17.  His is a big guy for his age, and everyone that sees him, thinks he is at least 20 or 21.  He is a handsome, rugged hardworking young man, who loves to hunt and fish almost as much as he loves to eat.   He is a golfer.  I always tease him saying he is a perfect example of Cledus does golfing.  He is very good though.

My youngest is David, and he is 10.  He is the sport nut of the family.  He plays baseball and football, and is going to try basketball this year too.  He is never still.  Never!   So there is never a slow dull moment.  Either a game or practice of some sort almost all year long.

We live in a small rural area of East Central Alabama, and only own about 9 acres.  We have raised chickens, pigs, ducks, quail and even tried a cow once.  The cow was a total disaster.  We traded a pickup truck for the cow, and the cow fell over in a tiny little stream of water and drown 2 days later.  What luck huh?
About a year ago, we decided to get a goat.   It was love!  Definately the animal for us.  They are sweet, lovable little creatures with such diverse personalities.
Check the pet page, for more about the goats, and our dogs, and the story about the bobcats.

I was raised in a small area where we were free to ride our bikes, or horses all day, and mama wouldnt know where we were until dark, when we got home but that was ok, because it was a safer world then.  My daddy was a ceramic tile setter, and mama worked in different jobs but always worked hard.  We were poor, but had the things we needed.  I have one brother who is 7 years younger than me, so with that kind of age difference, we both kinda felt as only kids for awhile.  I "grew up" fishing.  I have pictures and have heard my mama tell about them taking me to the dam fishing when I was just a few weeks old, and her rigging up an umbrella over me in the boat.  I have so many fond memories of fishing at Lay Dam.  In my mind, it is the only place to fish.  We spent countless hours riding thru the Talladega National Forrest too.  Daddy loved the woods, loved hunting, but would enjoy just driving through to see the deer more.  My brother and I would ride in the back of the truck,  and have such a great time.  We also went to the county dump that was there once long ago, to hunt clorax bottles which were perfect for bottle fishing.  ;)  And I remember so many nights of going window shopping.  We couldnt afford to do alot, so at night, we would drive to Sylacauga, a nearby town, and daddy would park on one end of town, we would walk down the sidewalks looking in windows, and back down the other side of the street, doing the same.  I know that may sound so foolish to some, but it was a great pleasure for us.

Tommy grew up in the same county, but in a very different lifestyle.  He wasnt wealthy either, but they were a family of loggers.  I had never met a logger before I met him, and I had the same preconcieved notions many do about what a logger is and does.  And it wasnt pretty!  I have learned alot from him and his family though.  When I say his family were loggers, I mean all of em.  Everyone in this part of the county it seems is a logger.  But you couldnt find a better group of people either.  Good hardworking people!

While I had only one brother, Tommy had 3 brothers and 1 sister.  I was in for a shock at family gatherings.  LOL  What a loud happening!  Something I was not used to at all.  But I wouldnt trade all that noise for anything now.  Somethings just grow on you!

This is just a picture I have of Tommy, running the loader while David watches.

There is nothing sexier than the smell of diesel smoke and pine!!!  My goodness if I could bottle it and sell it as a mens cologne, I would be rich!  My busdriver friends tell me thats how they know I am a true redneck!   I love to watch Tommy work, and come home smelling of the woods and diesel.  WHERE IS MY SPOON???

workin hard!

What a job!

Tommy is the supervisor of the logging crew, he does most of the repairs, and also runs the loader everyday.  Matthew works with him in the summer months, and helps out alot trimming trucks, running the loader and the skidder when needed.  Tommy also drives the truck sometimes, to make an extra load when needed.  David loves working with his daddy about one day a week in the summer.  He is in charge of cleaning the saws and helping fuel.
